Last month, the Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA), put on their annual conference, TypeCon, in Denver, Colorado. This was actually the first type conference I'd been to since TypeCon2007 in Seattle, Washington. Given that Monotype's Type Director, Steve Matteson, lives just up the road in Louisville, we decided to take this opportunity to bring together our design team for a pre-conference offsite at his home. It was a wonderful gathering of a pretty amazing and talented team.
I got the opportunity to work with Goudy Thirty on the Vandercook press, and then used some foundry and wood type on a Challenge proof press the next day to print a second color. I hadn't printed letterpress in over 2 decades, and I found the physical and tactile nature of the work such a wonderful departure from my daily work with keyboard, mouse, trackpad and trackball.
Stay tuned for more of the story...
